What is Morse Code?
Morse code is a method of encoding text as a series of on-off signals — traditionally transmitted as electrical pulses, sound tones, or flashes of light. Each character is represented by a unique sequence of dots (·) and dashes (—).
It was invented by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s for use with the electric telegraph, revolutionising long-distance communication. Before the telephone, Morse code was the fastest way to send a message across continents and oceans.
A short signal — one unit of time. Represented as . in text notation.
A long signal — three units of time. Represented as - in text notation.
The most famous Morse signal — ... --- ... — adopted as an international distress call in 1906.
Morse code is still used today by amateur (ham) radio operators, in aviation navigation beacons, and as an accessibility input method for people with limited mobility. It remains one of the most resilient communication systems ever devised.
How It Works
Select Text → Morse to convert plain text into Morse code, or Morse → Text to decode Morse code back into readable text. Results update instantly as you type.
Morse code format:
- Each letter is encoded as a sequence of
.(dot) and-(dash) - Letters within a word are separated by a space
- Words are separated by
/(space-slash-space) - Lines of text are separated by new lines
- When decoding, use the same format — letters separated by spaces, words by
